Still Tide is two people and a small house at the end of the Overseas Highway. We came down from Connecticut for the water and stayed for the fish. Every print we sell began as a fish one of us has chased, cleaned or cooked.
Stephen's first job was on a commercial tuna boat, and he has been fishing since he was five. He is a spearfisherman above all: he has hunted fish on reefs and in blue water around the world, and he knows what a fish looks like when it is alive, close and lit by the sun. That is the standard every drawing is held to. If Stephen would not put it on his own wall, it does not ship.
Tina is learning the ways of the ocean, one tide at a time, and she brings the eye. A career in marketing and in the world of fashion taught her how a thing should look on a wall, on a table and in a photograph. She is the reason the prints hang as well as they read, and the reason the paper, the frames and the type all feel like one house.
Most fish art is decoration first and a fish second. Ours starts from real photographs of adult fish, is checked fin by fin against them, and is locked the moment it passes. Nothing is redrawn to fit a frame. Cover the label and a guide would still name the fish.
