Drawn true: what we verified
This specimen passed a feature-by-feature check against real photographs of adult fish:
- Black band along the base of the soft dorsal, running over the tail base and down the lower tail lobe
- Narrow electric-blue band just below the black dorsal band
- Bony scutes only on the straight rear part of the lateral line
- Long, sickle-shaped pectoral fin and deeply forked tail
- No black spot on the gill cover and no yellow in the fins

How to tell it apart
Not to be confused with: Blue runner
Blue runner has a black spot on the gill cover and lacks the bar jack's black-and-blue dorsal band.
Not to be confused with: Crevalle jack
Crevalle have a steep, blunt head, black spots on the gill cover and pectoral fin, and yellow fins.
