- Yellow-bronze stripe from the snout through the eye to the tail base, with a narrower stripe above it
- Large, round, sharply defined dark blotch at the base of the tail
- Silvery-white body with faint fine yellowish lines along the scale rows
- Pale, whitish fins and a forked tail
- No blue stripes on the head

White grunt has blue stripes on the head. The tomtate's head is plain, with bronze stripes only.
