- Roughly round dark shoulder spot just behind the gill cover
- Narrow dark oblique bars slanting across the upper sides, fading below the midline
- High, arched back and short, blunt, rounded snout
- Yellow pelvic and anal fins, yellowish pectoral
- Slightly forked tail and no chin barbels

How to tell it apart
Not to be confused with: Atlantic croaker
Croaker have tiny chin barbels, wavy lines of spots, no shoulder spot and a tail that is not forked.
Not to be confused with: Silver perch
Silver perch have a rounded to pointed tail. The spot is the only Florida drum with a forked tail.
