How to tell it apart
Not to be confused with: White marlin
White marlin has rounded tips on its dorsal, pectoral and anal fins and spots on the dorsal. The blue marlin's fins are pointed.
Not to be confused with: Sailfish
The sailfish's first dorsal is a tall sail, taller than the body is deep. The blue marlin's is lower and falls away steeply.
