How to tell it apart
Not to be confused with: King mackerel
An adult king mackerel is unspotted, and its lateral line dips sharply below the second dorsal. Spanish mackerel keeps its gold spots and a smooth lateral line.
Not to be confused with: Cero
Cero has a bronze stripe along the middle of the side as well as spots.
