This specimen passed a feature-by-feature check against real photographs of adult fish:
- Deep, strongly curved belly under a flatter back
- Single short dorsal fin at mid-back with no trailing thread
- Bluish-green back over bright silver sides; dorsal and tail faintly yellowish
- Only a faint dusky mark at the upper corner of the gill opening
- Large eye and small, closed mouth; deeply forked tail

How to tell it apart
Not to be confused with: Atlantic thread herring
Thread herring have a long thread trailing from the last dorsal ray and rows of dark spots along the upper side. The scaled sardine has neither.
Not to be confused with: Spanish sardine
Spanish sardine is slimmer and rounder in the body, with a golden stripe along the side.
