Drawn true: what we verified
This specimen passed a feature-by-feature check against real photographs of adult fish:
- Long, slender black lower-jaw beak with a bright orange-red tip; short triangular upper jaw
- Short, low dorsal and anal fins set far back near the tail, opposite each other
- Short pectoral fin set high behind the gill cover
- Deeply forked tail, lower lobe longer, upper lobe orange-yellow
- Dark blue-green back over bright silver sides

How to tell it apart
Not to be confused with: Balao
Balao has a bluish-violet upper tail lobe and a longer pectoral fin. The ballyhoo's upper tail lobe is orange-yellow and its pectoral is short.
Not to be confused with: Needlefish
Needlefish have both jaws drawn out into a long toothy beak. Ballyhoo have only the lower jaw extended.
